Healthy Beginnings at Kincraig
The children at Kincraig Baby and Toddler Group recently had a very enjoyable morning making their own snack as part of the Healthy Beginnings project.
We made vegetable couscous to start. A stock cube was dissolved in boiling water and added to dried couscous (a grown up did this bit). Whilst this was being absorbed, the children prepared the vegetables – they had a choice of pepper, and spring onion – these were precut into strips so it was so easy for them to cut into bite sized pieces using a cutlery knife. They then mixed their veg with the couscous with sweetcorn and pumpkin seeds.
Then the children made fruit kebabs, threading pieces of watermelon, strawberry, pineapple and banana onto a drinking straw. These were not only yummy, but was a good practice for their fine motor skills.
The session was a hit with both the children and their parents, with very few leftovers! The mums felt that the children were encouraged to try different foods as they had prepared them themselves, and one mum said she would try and let her toddler help more at home in the future.
